Former President Mohammed Shahabuddin officially departed Bangabhaban, the official presidential residence, with his family on Sunday afternoon, just two days after submitting his resignation. Escorted by a tight 18-vehicle security convoy, his departure at 2:25 PM marked the formal conclusion of his tenure as Bangladesh’s 22nd president, nearly 21 months ahead of his scheduled term completion in April 2028.

The official residence and its surrounding avenues witnessed heightened security protocols and a heavy media presence throughout the afternoon. A crowd of curious onlookers gathered along the streets as the presidential motorcade crossed the gates of Bangabhaban under the watchful eye of law enforcement agencies.

Following his exit, the former president moved to his private residence on Road 123 in Gulshan, where he previously resided on the fifth floor before assuming office. Preparations, including fresh painting and deep cleaning, had been underway at the Gulshan apartment since Saturday, while police and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) personnel were deployed around the premises to ensure comprehensive security.

Shahabuddin, who took oath as president on April 24, 2023, tendered his signed resignation letter to Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad on Friday, July 24, citing physical illness as the reason for his step-down.

In accordance with constitutional provisions, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad has assumed the duties of Acting President. While operating official state functions from Bangabhaban, Acting President Ahmad will continue to reside in his current official residence as the Speaker of the National Parliament.

According to constitutional mandates, the process to elect the nation's 23rd president through the Parliament will now be initiated within the next 90 days.
